Cryptography is the art and science of hiding information, or converting plaintext (human readable) into ciphertext (an unreadable form) for the purposes, or services of:
Confidentiality – changing the information so it can’t be seen
Integrity – the information remains as it was originally, or it remains intact
Authenticity – proof of origin, or that the information Actually came from the claimed source
Non-repudiation – prevents anyone from denying that they are the sender – no one can deny sending it
Access control – via keys and passcodes; nobody can see the information without the right key, so this provides access control
If you need to memorize the five services, repeat or write the following down:
Confidentiality can’t (be seen), integrity is intact, authenticity actually (came from the source), non-repudiation no-one, and (access) control with keys.
